Vaughan Gething should set up an independent review

There is significant concern surrounding the plans to site the new Velindre Cancer Centre on the Meadows in Whitchurch. For a long time campaigners, and your local Conservative councillors, have objected to the plans on environmental grounds.

Living and working in the area, and using having used the meadows and the old railway cutting for leisure time, for many years, we know what a valuable community resource it has become. Now it is suggested this could be lost and replaced with a hospital that does not fit current thinking. 57 health professionals have put their names to a letter to Vaughan Gething, the Welsh Government Health Minister, asking for a fully independent review of the plans for the new VCC.

They have also repeated a question we have asked previously; what were the circumstances behind Velindre being offered the meadows, when they already had a preferred site to develop a new cancer hospital?

A review into satellite siting of services appears to be confused with a review of a siting a stand-alone cancer hospital on the meadows. We have joined calls for the Health Minister to instigate a full and independent review before any further progress is made. We cannot afford to lose vital green space for a hospital that may not be fit-for-purpose.
